“Spirals of sanity” explores breathing as a way of relaxation in times of anxiety and stress. Breathing is a vital component for one to live. It is a daily routine that we usually forget unless it’s disrupted. Breathing is also used in many practices to regulate the mind and body. For this work, I focused on the way the breath goes in to the body, moves around the body, through the lungs, diaphragm, and then out and how it’s able to change the negative thoughts in the mind/body into positive ones. The counting of breath is an important element that gets featured in the work through the different parts. Inhaling for two counts and exhaling for four counts is a breathing counting technique that is used to redirect one’s mind to the breath, allowing it to focus on that, rather than the anxiety in the mind.
